Sonepur:
The issue of child rights came to the fore through a film festival called Kallol that screened films either made by children or were on them at the town hall here on Friday.
The Research Academy for Rural Enrichment and some other rights organisations of the state joined hands to organise the festival to create awareness on the issues of child rights.
Eminent film personality Atala Bihari Panda inaugurated the festival that discussed issues related to child rights. Bhubaneswar based Aaina, Odisha State Child Rights Commission, Alankar TV and Unicef were the other organisers of the festival. Child rights activists from eight districts of west Odisha attended the event.
Panda said films were always a powerful medium to create awareness. "Children are the future of the society, and their issues should be discussed in a larger forum. Parents should take care to ensure for the physical and mental development of their children. The film festival on children's issues is an innovative step to create awareness."
Aaina's programme manger Jyotsna Sahu said the festival had been divided into two categories. "The films made by the children come under the non-competitive category, while the ones made by the adults are competitive in nature. All are short films of only 30 seconds, 60 seconds and 90 seconds duration. The films are mostly based on themes such as sexual harassment, institutional harassment, child labour, child marriage and family violence," she said.
Sahu further said the state had been divided into four zones to spread the message of child rights among the people. "The state has been divided into four zones namely east, west, north and south to create awareness on child rights among the people," she said.
Though most of the films were in Odia, some screened were also in Hindi and English. The films included Mo Adhikara, Manisha Pania, Open the Door, Mo Kahani Bapa, Mana Badalila, Soch Badlo, Nishabd, Ghar Chale and Antardwand.
