Tamilnadu best Actor Manorama .....She ruled the screen

Tamilnadu best Actor Manorama .....She ruled the screen(www.thehindu.com)
SEA OF HUMANITY: (From left) Thousands of people took part in the funeral procession of actor Manorama in Chennai on Sunday; actors Rajnikanth, Kovai Sarala, DMK president M. Karunanidhi and actor Vijay paying their respects at the actor's residence.

Whether comedy or drama, Manorama’s success sprang not just from her remarkable talent but also her amazing ability to adapt.

Maalayitta Mangai, the 1958 drama produced by Kannadasan and directed by G.R. Nathan, is remembered mainly for two reasons today — one, the magical Viswanathan-Ramamurthy score, studded with hits like Naanandri yaar varuvaar and Senthamizh thenmozhiyaal. And two, the actress listed as “puthumuga arimugam” at the bottom of the second scroll of cast names, far below the character artists: Manorama. She plays Anjalai, the domestic help earning a salary of six rupees in a rich household. It’s a supporting role, with comic shades — she would go on to play a similar role in many films.
Sakalakalavalli, the versatile actor
Back in the day, Thillana Mohanambal was one of the few novels that was successfully translated into a movie. Director of the film A.P. Nagarajan made it a star-packed film. Most of the characters essayed in the film stand out even now, years after its release.
But Manorama just slipped under the skin of the character — Karuppayee-turned-Jil Jil Ramamani-turned Roja Rani — refused to be overshadowed even by the thespian and her mentor Sivaji Ganesan.
Nothing captured the life of a Sadir dancer — who had to contend with the life of having to be at the mercy of landlords, normally known as Minors.
When she tells Sivaji Ganesan in the film “Yellathan Kattren. Yenna Prayojanam. Ippadi Perai Maathi Vachittu Oor Oora Peya Alaiyiren” (I have learnt every art form. What is the point? I have to change my name and moving around like a ghost), her poignant words bear testimony to the status a woman artist in a patriarchal world despite possessed with talents.
Jil Jil Ramamani, the fictitious character probably bore the closest resemblance to Manorama.
In the film, Sikkil Shanmugasundram would introduce her to his troupe, saying that she could perform Karagam, poikal kudirai, sadir and all other art forms. “Ondrum Vidurathu Illai. Sakalakalavalli” ( She doesn't leave anything untouched. She's so versatile). Knowing her as he did, he probably was paying the highest compliment to Manorama the artiste. She indeed was a Sakalakalavalli.
Unnal Mudiyum Thambi - Evolution as a character artist
Manorama was K. Balachander’s choice for the role of daughter-in-law of a famous musician. Caught between the imperious father-in-law Bilahari Marthanadam Pillai and a speech impaired husband and a irrepressible brother-in-law, Manorama as Anni Ankayarkanni suffers silently even as she seeks to effect peace in the family.
Burying fathom deep the comedian in her, Manorama evolves into one of the finest character role in Tamil films. Her facial expressions in the scene in which her husband plays Karaharapriya in nagaswaram to bring together his father and brother was no less musical.
Pattikada Pattanama - Adding flavour to Madurai dialect
Vellaiamma, the quintessential Madurai woman, is all courage and firmness beneath her jovial disposition. Manorama, who donned the role in the film Pattikada Pattanama, was in full flow and enthralled everyone with her effortless rendering the Madurai dialect. The way she says “Aithan” (Atthan) is both loveable and ridiculous.
She had the audience in splits when she almost drowns M.R.R. Vasu’s sidekick Pakkoda Kader in the Vaigai river and later thrashes Vasu after inviting him for a feast. Her courage is manifest when she comes all the way to Chennai in search of Vasu, who had deserted her after marriage.

Manorama -- She ruled the screen

Fact files

  • »She had known me as a three-year-old child actor. A loving woman and a great performer. I would say that she and Nagesh are the mummy and daddy of Tamil cinema comedy. • » Aachi Manorama's death comes as a shock to all of us. I was talking to her yesterday evening and she said that she will participate in the event related to Nadigar Sangam elections. • »Her contribution to the film industry is immense. While her achievements — she has acted in more than 5000 stage plays and 1200 movies apart from netting several film awards and receiving Padma Sri — are many, she remained a simple, humble human being. --Vijayakant, DMDK leader.

Mistress of arts

Whether comedy or drama, Manorama’s success sprang not just from her remarkable talent but also her amazing ability to adapt.

Manorama was like an elder sister to me: Jayalalithaa

Describing Manorama as her elder sister, Tami Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said the veteran actor’s demise was an irreparable loss and the vacuum created by her passing away cannot be filled by anyone..

Singing, her launch pad into theatre and films

Manorama had plenty of opportunity to watch films when her family moved from Mannargudi to Pallathur in Chettinadu.

When the camera rolled, she lived the character'

It is safe to say that no one in the Tamil film industry portrayed the role of a mother with the versatility and subtlety that she brought to the screen.

Indian cinema goes English

Indian cinema goes English
Bollywood's latest films are starting to speak to a new audience in their own language - English. Once used only by ruthless pith-helmeted colonials in films about the Raj, English-language Indian cinema has come of age when Bollywoodhas started to explore the contradictions between western lifestyles and traditional values.
The latest is The Last Lear, a film that pitches Bollywood's most recognisable face, Amitabh Bachchan, as a thespian who yearns to take to the stage for a final performance as King Lear. The film, which is entirely in English, contains no songs, no disco dances and no family reunions.
The Last Lear almost did not happen, ironically because of a fight over language. On Wednesday, the Mumbai premiere was stopped after a rightwing politician, Raj Thackeray, accused Bachchan's wife of insulting Marathi, a language widely spoken in and around Mumbai, by saying she preferred to speak Hindi. It went ahead only after Bachchan apologised.
Arindam Chaudhuri, the film's producer, said: "English is part of modern middle-class modern life in India. We talk, think and dream in English, that's why we wanted to do the film. What's changed in India is the audience."
He said five years ago moviegoers were mainly young men who saw about eight films a year. "Now going to the cinema is a family outing ... and they don't want to see singing and dancing every time they go.
Director Rahul Bose, who is making a film based on Moth Smoke, the first novel by British Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid, said: "It's a risk doing an English movie. Producers take a leap of faith. We often wonder: can you get a big star? Can you sell it to Hindi-speaking audiences?"

Emergence of Anirudh as a Brand .....All India Cinema News

Emergence of Anirudh as a Brand

Anirudh is not just a name, it is a brand, unarguably, one of the most valuable brands in Kollywood. Not many would continue their dream run for a long time, but Anirudh has been yet to put a wrong step in the times where, critics and fans are waiting to write off a person, irrespective of his/her past records. The boy is turning 25 today. Let's take a look at what he had done so far and why his career graph is always growing towards the Y-axis.

'3' Every music director would love to wield all his best tunes on his first opportunity and Anirudh is no different. Well, let's not touch 'Kolaveri', as it has already been discussed and written similar to the numbers of the views that it had garnered over the 4 years of its inception. 'Idhazhin Oru Oram', 'Kannazhaga', 'Nee Partha Vizhigal', and 'Po Nee Po' are still fresh enough to entertain the masses. I have not seen people juggling with the remote/ changing the FM stations when the above songs getting played. Not sure, how many people had listened to the remix version of 'Po Nee Po' which was sung by, Sathya Prakash. Well, if you haven't, then, take your earphones and do it right away. You will genuinely fall in love with the brilliance.

'Ethir Neechal' The Sophomore project, which is a litmus test to many people, because of the expectations created by the debut victory. But Anirudh had other ideas. He roped in 'Hip Hop' Tamizha and took his tunes to the veteran, Valee, and created a brand new flavor. Be it the 'Ethir Neechal' title track or the melodious 'Velicha Poove', he won the hearts of youngsters right away. The rest of the album kicked along with the momentum of two biggies and wiped off even the minute doubts whether the 'Kolaveri' boy is a one film wonder.
'Vanakkam Chennai' Having been teamed up with Dhanush for the first two projects, Anirudh came out of his comfort zone to score his first hat-trick. This album has placed him in the elite league with the earworms like, 'Penne Penne', 'Osaka Osaka', 'Engadi Porandha', and 'Ailasa Ailasa'. But, the 'Chennai City Gangster' sounded a bit like his earlier tunes and he gave the first opportunity for the critics to point out something.
'Velaiyilla Pattathari' Anirudh has literally transformed himself as the most important person in Tamil Cinema with this album. Be it the 'VIP' title track or 'Whatta Karuvaad', Anirudh gave an impression that he's the best in the business to read the pulse of the current generation. Having said that, he displayed his voraciousness with 'Amma Amma'. Over the years, Tamil Cinema has given a few songs which praise the love and affection for mom's, and this one joins in that elite list.etc....
